Want to work in the UK through a legitimate, long-term route? The Skilled Worker Visa is your path to do just that. It allows you to take up a job with a UK employer, live in the UK, and possibly unlock a route to permanent residence.
At our Houston-based firm, we guide U.S. clients through every step—from securing a sponsorship to settling permanently.
To apply, you must have:
A valid job offer from a UK employer licensed by the Home Office.
A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) that confirms details about your role and sponsorship.
A job listed among the UK’s eligible skilled occupations.
Competency in English, typically at B1 level.
The ability to support yourself financially—demonstrated through personal savings.
The minimum salary requirement for your role.
Once approved, this visa lets you live and work in the UK for up to five years. If you meet the eligibility thresholds, you qualify to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), paving the way to settlement and citizenship.
You must be paid at least £41,700 per year or the ’going rate’ for your role—whichever is higher. That’s based on the UK’s most recent salary revisions (updated July 2025).
Some applicants may qualify for lower thresholds, such as:
New Entrants (e.g., recent graduates): as low as £33,400 or 70% of the going rate.
PhD holders in relevant subjects: from £33,400 to £37,500 depending on whether it’s STEM or other fields.
Jobs on the Immigration Salary List: from £33,400 for degree-level roles.
These are exceptions—not the norm—so it’s best to check your eligibility carefully.
Absolutely. Your employer must hold an A-rated Sponsor Licence from the Home Office and must issue you a proper Certificate of Sponsorship. Without it, your application won’t be accepted.
Most Skilled Worker applications are processed within 3 weeks for those applying from outside the UK, and around 8 weeks for in-country or extensions. There are faster processing options if you’re in a hurry.
Q: What’s the education and skill level requirement?
You need skills at least equivalent to RQF Level 6, which is comparable to a bachelor’s degree.
Q: Will dependents be allowed to join me?
Yes, your partner and children can apply as dependents—but they must meet eligibility criteria and bear any extra fees.
Q: Can I switch jobs or extend my visa?
Yes, you can request a visa update if you change jobs, and you can extend your visa as long as you continue to meet all requirements.
You’ll receive:
A 30-day entry vignette (if applying from outside the UK), which allows you to enter the country.
Upon arrival, you’ll collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) at a local Post Office—this serves as your working and living ID in the UK.
Make sure you comply with visa conditions: work only for your sponsor, and don’t claim public funds. Compliance is essential to protect your status.
